With the pollen count likely to be very high over the next few days and coming weeks, we have come up with some tips to help you control hay fever and allergy symptoms using natural essential oils.
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common condition that shows signs and symptoms similar to a cold with sneezing, congestion, runny nose and sinus pressures. There are seasonal hay fever triggers which include pollen and spores that will only cause symptoms during certain months of the year. The following are some examples of hay fever triggers:
- Tree pollen – these tend to affect people in the spring.
- Grass pollen – these tend to affect people later on in the spring and also in the summer.
- Weed pollen – these are more common during autumn (fall).
- Fungi and mold spores – these are more common when the weather is warm.
Essential oils which have been recommended for use with hay fever include, Lavender,Roman and German Chamomile, Eucalyptus, rose, lavender, peppermint, basil, marjoram, clary sage and lemon.
Put a few drops of your preferred essential oil on a handkerchief and use it when an attack occurs. Equally you can use an aromatherapy burner or steam inhalation, this is where you put your head under a over a bowl of very hot water (taking care not to scald yourself)and add a few drops of the essential oils to the bowl.
Blend Roman chamomile with eucalyptus, lemon or lavender essential oils for instant and effective relief, it is just a case of finding which oils work the best for you. As always if your symptoms persist or worsen you should see your doctor.
